Rain Mako
Rain Mako (born August 26, 1976 in Christchurch, New Zealand) is a former female boxer who currently lives in Melbourne, Australia.
Mako helped popularize women's boxing in Oceania: while boxing is still considered by most to be a male sport, women's boxing has enjoyed a raise in popularity since 1996, and Mako boxed from 2000 to 2001.
Various reasons can be pointed out as why Mako did, however, have a short career in the sport that gave her regional fame: there are approximately 20 active male boxers for each active female boxer, which means that women usually fight less fights than men. On the other hand, the fact that she lives in Oceania, might have also hurt her career chances: women boxers do not earn as much money as male boxers do, and the expenses of travelling to Australia to fight Mako from mostly anywhere around the world, or viceversa, could have proven too high to stage a fight between Mako and other, more famous boxers around her weight division, like Laila Ali.
Mako made her professional debut on August 18, 2000, beating Kathy Zutt by a four round decision at Melbourne.
On November 24, she followed that win with what would be her first and only career knockout victory, defeating Holly Ferneley in the first round.
Mako then boxed Pono Rangi, February 9 of 2001, beating her by a unanimous six round decision.
Mako's career then took a downturn, when she was defeated by Zutt in the rematch, on March 30. Mako's first defeat came by a fourth round knockout. A second defeat in a row came against Sue Glassey on July 6 by an eight round unanimous decision.
Mako's last fight came against Kathy O'Brien on November 16. O'Brien, who was making her boxing debut, lost a split decision to Mako. The fact that O'Brien made her debut against a much more experienced fighter like Mako may have also had something to do with Mako's retirement: seeing as any unexperienced boxer could be put in a fight against someone with more experience, potentially risking the newer female boxer's life, Mako might have felt disappointed at the sport she practiced.
Mako had a record of 4 wins and 2 losses, with 1 knockout win.
It shall be pointed out, that all of Mako's fights took place at Melbourne's Knox Basketball Stadium.
