R. Geraint Gruffydd
Professor Emeritus R Geraint Gruffydd, MA DPhil FBA is a scholar of Welsh language and literature and is also an amateur theologian. During a successful academic career he held three high offices first the Chair of Welsh language and literature at the University of Wales Aberystwyth (1970–1979); secondly the Librarianship of the National Library of Wales (1980–1985) and then thirdly the Directorship of the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies (1985–1993).
Since his retirement in 1993 he has not rested and was President of the International Congress of Celtic Studies until 2003 and was also Vice-President of University of Wales Aberystwyth until recently. Despite all the posts he held during his career he managed to conduct extensive academic work. He has written books and chapters on a wide range on subjects from his treatment of Dafydd ap Gwilym, through to William Williams Pantycelyns work and forward in to 20th century writers such as Saunders Lewis.
He is a Christian leaning firmly on Calvinism. Perhaps one would associate him with Evangelicalism as he was one of the many reformed Christians (see Reformation) who left the old denominations of Wales and joined independent Evangelical Churches during the latter half of the 20th century (see Evangelical Movement of Wales). He would also consider himself a Welsh Nationalist and is a supporter of Plaid Cymru.
