Quilapayún

Quilapayún was one of the seminal Chilean artists of the nueva canción. Their name is taken from the Chilean Mapuche tribe, in whose language it means "three beards". Committed leftists, they went into exile in France after the military coup of 1973. Their major works include Santa Maria de Iquique (1970), an album of spoken history, songs, and instrumentals about a notorious massacre in the city of Iquique, and the song "El pueblo unido jamás será vencido" (Spanish: "The people, united, will never be defeated"), which was covered and made famous by Inti-Illimani.
