Præneste fibula

(Redirected from Praeneste fibula)

The Praeneste fibula or Præneste fibula (the "brooch of Palestrina") was a brooch discovered in Palestrina. It is dated circa 7th century BC, and inscribed with the Old Latin text:

MANIOS MED FHEFHAKED NVMASIOI

Which, in Latin, is:

MANIVS ME FECIT NVMERIO

Or:

Manius fashioned me for Numerius

Thought to be the oldest example of Old Latin, this product of the forge proved to be a forgery — fashioned, in fact, not by Manius, but by someone else.
