Musical career
Ramel's songs are noted for their humor and drastic wordplay. He has written at least one song in English, "The Sukiyaki Syndrome", about a visit in a Japanese restaurant.
His first hit was in 1944 with his song "Johanssons boogie-woogie-vals" (Johansson's boogie voogie waltz). Other songs include: "Tjo va de va livat i holken i lördags" (Whoopee what it was bustle in the birdhouse at Saturday), "Sorglösa brunn" (Light-hearted well, a play on the real Ramlösa), "Karl Nilsson", "Jag diggar dig" (I dig you), "Varför är där ingen is till punschen? "(Why is there no ice in the Punsch?), "Det skulle aldrig delfinerna göra" (That would never the Dolphins do), "De sista entusiasterna" (the last fanatics).
Nearly all songs are funny, but there are some that are worth considering. Like this text from "Underbart är kort"(Wounderful is short).
Bara en enda ros på ett evigt klänge (Just an only Rose, on a never-ending rambler)
så är livet (so is the life)
trist varar länge (dreary lasts for long time)
men underbart är kort – (but wounderful is short)
alldeles för kort (All to short)
From Ratataa.
Knäppupp
In 1952 Ramel and Felix Alvo started the company Knäppupp AB. The Knäppupp vaudevilles became a Swedish amusement for many years. The first Knäppupp was named "Akta Huvet" (Take care of the head) because Povel came in through a cableway from the roof to the vaudeville. The show opened at the Cirkus theatre in Gothenburg in 1952. Knäppupp AB also produced some movies, for example "Ratataa" in 1956. Povel Ramel also made several krogshower (pub-shows), for example KaRamelodier (Karameller means sweets, RAMEL is Povel's last name and melodier means melodies).
The Karamelodiktstipendiet
Ramel etablished the Karamelodiktstipendiet in 1983, a prize annually awarded to a Swedish entertainer or group of entertainers. The name is a wordplay, from karamell' ("caramel" as in candy), his surname Ramel and dikt ("poem"). The award is personally awarded by Ramel, who reads a short humorous poem written for the occasion.
