Pontine Marshes

Pontine Marshes

The Pontine Marshes are an area in the Italian province of Lazio that were reclaimed in 1928 by Benito Mussolini and his Fascist government. The government drained the marshes, cleared vegetation, and settled several hundred families. Emperors and popes have made unsuccessful attempts at reclamation of the area until Mussolini.

The Italian towns of Littoria (now Latina) in 1932, Sabaudia in 1934, Pontinis in 1935, Aprilia in 1937, and Pomezia in 1939 were built in the reclaimed areas.
