Overview
George Gaynes plays the role of Commandant Eric Lassard, a tired officer who receives an award, and Tab Thacker plays House Conklin, an academy graduate who gets to go on vacation in lieu of reporting for duty. House almost crashes the flight to Miami by sitting in the wrong seat, but redeems himself by breaking the door to the plane when it won't open upon arrival. The film also stars Michael Winslow, Marion Ramsey, Bubba Smith and Matt McCoy.
Plot & Analysis
Captain Thaddeus Harris, played by G.W. Bailey, schemes to fill Lassard's shoes as Academy Commandant by chartering a flight to Miami on a broken plane filled with farm animals, dropping his pants in public, and lighting himself on fire. His retarded lapdog lieutenant, played by Lance Kinsey, fares slightly better, getting away with burning off the seat of his pants water skiing and getting crotch-batted by a cactus plant. But it isn't long before the film's two stars must pull their collective acts together in order to foil cranky jewel thief Tony, played by Rene Auberjonois, who won Worst Supporting Actor for 1988 for the film. Robert Guillaume, Auberjonois' co-star in the hit TV series Benson, presented him with his trophy during an emotional ceremony. The movie was written by Stephen Curwick and directed by Alan Myerson.
Trivia
This was the first installment in the series where Steve Guttenberg failed to appear.
Myerson originally cast veteran actor J.T. Walsh to play the role of the Mayor of Miami Beach, who suggested James Hampton when he told Myerson he wasn't interested.
