The Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps is a Division I drum and bugle corps based in Rockford, Illinois and founded in 1967, and is a member corps of Drum Corps International. Often just "Regiment" or "The Regiment", the corps is a long-standing DCI member corps and a favorite of many fans. Originally founded as the Rockford Rangers, the corps name was changed after a group of corps staff heard a rendition of a piece entitled "The Phantom Regiment" by Leroy Anderson. The corps existed for several years from 1956, but a 1965 fire destroyed the corps hall as well as almost all corps property. Reformed with a new board of directors in 1967, the corps started back up and began the journey to become the Phantom Regiment audiences know today.
Phantom Regiment has been the DCI champion one time, in 1996, in a tie with the Blue Devils. In addition, the corps has placed second four times (1977, 1978, 1979, and 1989) as well as placing third twice (1993 and 1994).
Phantom Regiment has been aggressive in bringing to the field challenging classical music, including that of Dmitri Shostakovich, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Antonin Dvorak. One commentator noted that the corps is "drum corps' classical music identity". Regiment shows have included the music of Ludwig von Beethoven's Ode to Joy, Spartacus by Aram Khachaturian, the New World Symphony, and the lauded 1996 Regiment performance of the music of Shostakovich, especially the closing of his fifth symphony.
