Pam McConnell

Pam McConnell is a Toronto city councillor representing one of the two Toronto Centre—Rosedale wards. A teacher she first entered politics being elected as a school board trustee in 1982 and holding that position until 1994. She played a prominent role in advocating for adult literacy programs. In 1988 she became vice-chair of the Toronto School Board and in 1992 became its chair. In 1994 she left the school board and was elected to city council in a close race. With the creation of the megacity in 1997 she was forced into a tough election, but edged out fellow leftist Peter Tabuns by just over two hundred votes. On council she was active on child poverty issues. Despite her long status as an NDP member she backed Barbara Hall in the 2003 Toronto election. In 2005 she rose to become chair of the Toronto police board.
