Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company

The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company or P&O is a shipping line which started in 1840 after the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company won the British Admiralty contract to carry the mail overseas in 1837.

Brodie McGhie Wilcox and Arthur Anderson, who had been partners since 1822, formed the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company in 1834 with services to Vigo, Oporto, Lisbon and Cadiz.
