Olive (band)

Olive are an electronic music group from United Kingdom, usually associated with the trip-hop style. Two of its members, producers Tim Kellett and Robin Taylor-Firth, had departed from their respective groups, Simply Red and Nightmares on Wax, prior to forming Olive with vocalist Ruth-Ann Boyle, who Kellett had met while recording her vocals for live manipulation at a Durutti Column concert. The group released their first single, You're Not Alone, in 1995. It took a year for hometown audiences to catch onto the track, and it eventually made number 1. America and Australia followed soon after, although neither country showed the same extent of love for the track, with it coming short of an American Top 40 position and being restricted to a small musical niche with Australians, especially listeners of the national youth radio network Triple J. Outlaw followed not long after, with similar responses, as well as their first EP, Extra Virgin in 1996.

In 2000, their second album, Trickle was released. While it still displayed the distinctive Olive sound, the tunes were cleaner and more dance-oriented, as demonstrated by the first single from the album, I'm Not in Love, a cover of the 10cc song, and featured on the movie The Next Big Thing. It also showed a changed line-up; between the release Outlaw and recording of Trickle, Taylor-Firth had left the group, bringing it down to a duo. Since then, Olive have laid dormant. They rereleased what was possibly their most popular single to date, You're Not Alone, early in 2005, but, like many trip-hop and pseudo-trip bands like them, little has been heard of them otherwise.
