Ogallala Aquifer

The Ogallala Aquifer underlies portions of eight states.

The Ogallala Aquifer is located beneath the Great Plains in the United States and is the world's largest aquifer, thanks to the many glaciers that once blanketed the continent. An aquifer (concentration of groundwater) dating back to the last ice age, over 10,000 years ago, the Ogallala has become depleted by about 30% due to extraction for irrigation purposes. This threatens the stability of the land above the Aquifier's area.
