Nurmijärvi

Nurmijärvi is a village and a rural municipality north of Finland's capital Helsinki.

The proximity to Helsinki, 37 kilometers, has led to a considerable growth of the major villages such as Rajamäki, which nowadays rather are to be considered suburbs of Helsinki.

Nurmijärvi is best known as the birthplace of Finland's national author, Aleksis Kivi (1834-1872). His play "Nummisuutarit" (The Cobblers of the Heath) – with colorful scenes of rural life in 19th century Nurmijärvi parish – are performed in summers at a outdoor theatre in Palojoki, the village were Alex Kivi was born.
