Noxious trade
Noxious trade is a term used to describe professions which are disreputable due to their pollution. The archetypal historical example is the tannery. According to the Northern Territory of Australia (1997), a noxious trade is (in part), "any trade, business, process or manufacture whatsoever causing effluvia, offensive fumes, vapours or gases, or discharging dust, foul liquid, blood or other impurity, or any noxious or offensive trade, business or manufacture, and any trade that unless preventative measures are adopted, may become a nuisance to health".
