As of the census2 of 2000, there are 60,433 people, 25,542 households, and 16,117 families residing in the city. The population density is 520.7/km² (1,348.6/mi²). There are 27,567 housing units at an average density of 237.5/km² (615.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 62.55% White, 33.98% Black or African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.18% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 2.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 25,542 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.9% are married couples living together, 17.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
