Nordlandsbanen
Nordlandsbanen is a railway line between Trondheim and Bodø. 729 km long, it is the longest line in the Norwegian railway system, and the only Norwegian line to cross the Arctic circle. (Ofotbanen, at Narvik is further north but does not cross the Arctic circle).
After leaving Trondheim, the line goes to Trondheim Airport and the junction station of Hell where Meråkerbanen to Storlien in Sweden branches off. Further north, Nordlandsbanen passes through the towns of Steinkjer, Mosjøen, Mo i Rana and Fauske. A branch line to the town of Namsos is closed down.
Unlike most of the Norwegian rail network, Nordlandsbanen is not electrified. Passenger traffic is fairly heavy between Trondheim and Steinkjer, but it is significantly lighter further north. Most of the service is by diesel multiple units (DMUs), while the night train service with sleeping cars is locomotive hauled. Use of DMUs on the longest line in Norway has been slightly controversial because of the lower level of comfort.
