Nishiki-e

Nishiki-e (錦絵, a brocade picture) refers to multi-colored woodblock printing, especially of ukiyo-e. It was invented in the 1760s (Tokugawa period). In a stepwise fashion, for every color on the image, a woodblock is carved.
