Nimbus 2000

The Nimbus 2000 was a much heralded broomstick in the Harry Potter saga, created and written by author Joanne K. Rowling.

Harry Potter aquires his Nimbus 2000 broomstick in the story after Professor McGonagall witnesses him performing impressive flying skills during his first broomstick lesson at Hogwarts school in his First year (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone). McGonagall immediatley selects him into training for the Gryffindor Quiddich Team, as the team 'Seeker'. The Gryffindor team captain, Oliver Wood (played by Sean Biggerstaff in the Warner Bros. movie), suggests that, to compete on the team, Harry requires a better broomstick than the school provides.

"'He's just built for a Seeker, too,' said Wood, now walking around Harry and staring at him. 'Light – speedy – we'll have to get him a decent broom, Professor – a Nimbus 2000 or a Cleansweep 7, I'd say.'" (Oliver Wood to Professor McGonagall- Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter Nine- 'The Midnight Duel')

Harry's new Nimbus 2000 is delivered to him by Owl Post two or three days later. Draco Malfoy (played by Tom Felton in the movie), Harry's sworn enemy at Hogwarts, also the cause of Harry's impressive broomstick manoeuvers during Flying class, discovers in the Great Hall that Harry has been delivered a broomstick, and tries to get him in trouble with Professor Flitwick (played by Warwick Davis in the movie) for it. This fails, as Prof. McGonagall has already informed all the teachers of Harry's promotion to the Quiddich team, and to Malfoy's anger, Harry instead recieves Flitwick's congratulations.

"'That's a broomstick,' Malfoy said, throwing it back to Harry with a mixture of jealousy and spit on his face. 'You'll be in for it this time, Potter, first-years aren't allowed them.'" (Draco Malfoy to Harry Potter- Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter Ten- 'Hallowe'en')

"'Not arguing, I hope, boys?' Flitwick squeaked.
'Potter's been sent a broomstick, Professor.' said Malfoy, quickly.
'Yes, yes, that's right,' said Professor Flitwick, beaming at Harry 'Professor McGonagall told me all about the special circumstances, Potter. And what model is it?'
'A Nimbus Two Thousand, sir,' said Harry, fighting not to laugh at the look of horror on Malfoy's face. 'And it's really thanks to Malfoy here that I've got it,' he added." (Prof. Flitwick, Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter- Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter Ten- 'Hallowe'en')

In his first match, Harry beat the Slytherin team 152–7 by catching the Golden Snitch in his mouth while he was crashing.

Harry flies his Nimbus 2000 for another two years, winning many Quiddich matches, and loosing a couple as well. It is mostly because of the team's victories that Gryffindor continue to win the House Cup Championship year after year, gaining Harry renown as a Quiddich player at Hogwarts.

In the Second book, The Chamber of Secrets, a new make of the Nimbus appeared, the Nimbus 2001. All seven members of the Slytherin Quiddich team were supplied with Nimbus 2001s, supplied by Lucius Malfoy to sucure his son Draco a place on the Slytherin team as Seeker, in an attempt to rival Harry. Hermoine pointed out that in Quiddich, skill was more important than what broomstick they used. She was proved right when Gryffindor beat Slytherin in their next match.

Harry's Nimbus 2000 met it's end in Book 3, The Prisoner of Azkaban, at the hands of the Whomping Willow, a extremely territorial and violent willow tree in the Hogwarts, after the Dementors caused Harry to black out during a Quiddich match and fall off. The broom floated off the pitch and crashed into the Willow. Ron and Hermoine brought the remains to Harry in the school's Hospital Wing. Harry refused to let the matron Madam Pomfrey throw the splinters away.

Harry's Nimbus was replaced in the same book with a Firebolt, given to him by his Godfather, Sirrius Black, which surpassed both the makes of Nimbus.
