Nikoloz Muskhelishvili

Nikoloz (Niko) Muskhelishvili (February 16, 1891 – July 16, 1976) was a notable Georgian mathematician, one of the founders and first President (1941-1972) of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (GAS), Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1934), Professor (1922).

In 1914 he graduated from the St. Petersburg University (Russia). In 1917-1920 Muskhelishvili was Assistant Professor of this University, in 1920-1922 – Associate Professor of the Tbilisi State University (TSU), in 1922-1976 – a Professor of TSU, in 1941-1972 – first President of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (GAS), in 1972-1976 – Honorary President of GAS.

In 1939 Muskhelishvili was elected as Academician (Full Member) of the Academy of Sciences of USSR (now the Russian Academy of Science). Since 1956 he was a member of the International Committee of Congreses on Applied Mechanics, since 1960 a member of the Bureau of the International Union on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. In 1969 he received the International Prize "Modesto Panetti" of the Turin Academy of Sciences (Italy), in 1970 a Gold Medal of the Slovakian Academy of Sciences, in 1972 – a Lomonosov Gold Medal.

Muskhelishvili was author of outstanding scientific works in the fields of singular integral equations, mathematical physics, theory of elasticity, etc.
