Nicanor the Deacon

Nicanor was one of the Seven Deacons chosen in the Acts of the Apostles to minister to the Church of Jerusalem, by the Twelve Apostles. He was also one of the Seventy Apostles sent out by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke chapter 10. He is thought to have been a Jew from Cyprus living in Jerusalem. While little is known of his life, he probably became a missionary in Cyprus. According to the Annales of Cesar Baronius (1538-1607), now considered historically worthless, he died a martyr on Cyprus in the year 76 AD. Other accounts say he was martyred in Berj, an unidentified place, possibly confused with Botrys. Many modern scholars believe NIcanor actually died in peace.
