Ammonium hydroxide

(Redirected from Nh4oh)

Ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) is a name sometimes given to an aqueous solution of ammonia. Ammonia is more basic than water, and hence ammonium and hydroxide ions are be present in an aqueous solution of ammonia according to the following equilibrium:

NH3 + H2O ↔ NH4+ + OH-

With a base-ionization constant (Kb) of 1.8×10-5, in a 1M ammonia solution about 0.4% of the ammonia will be protonated to ammonium ions (equivalent to a pH of 9.4).
