Neyland Stadium
Neyland Stadium is a sports stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee. It serves primarily as the home of the University of Tennessee football team, the Volunteers, but is also used to host large conventions. It is the largest stadium in the South, and the second largest in the US. After 79 years, and 16 expansion projects, Neyland Stadium now has a total of 104,079 seats.
The field upon which the stadium stands was bought in 1921 and named Shields-Watkins Field after Col. W.S. Shields and his wife Alice Watkins-Shields, who provided the initial capital for the purchase. The stadium which surrounds the field was named Neyland Stadium after General Robert R. Neyland, who was head football coach at Tennessee from 1926 to 1952 and, after retiring from coaching, served as athletic director for ten years.
