The Neustadt International Prize for Literature is a biennial award for literature sponsored by the University of Oklahoma and World Literature Today. Authors, including poets, novelists, and playwrights are eligible for the $50,000 prize, which is unusual for an international literary prize. The prize is funded by an endowment from the Neustadt family of Ardmore, Oklahoma and Dallas, Texas, and was the first literary award of this scope to originate in the United States. The prize was established in 1969 as the Books Abroad International Prize for Literature, then renamed the Books Abroad / Neustadt Prize before assuming its present name in 1976. Some consider the prize to be amost as prestigious as the Nobel Prize in Literature.
