The term Neubauten has been used in German since the 18th century to mean "new building". Colloquially it has been used in particular to denote functionalist buildings built during the post-war German reconstruction – monolithic concrete buildings identical to most concrete housing projects and other monolithic concrete buildings built elsewhere, particularly those of the 1960s. The Berlin Kongresshalle was a prime example of this kind of building.

These "Neubauten" had a reputation for being poorly consructed. In 1980 the Berlin Kongresshalle collapsed due to its cheap 1960s concrete and metal construction. The Industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten meaning "collapsing Neubauten" based their name on this incident.
