Nagaoka, Niigata

Nagaoka (長岡市; -shi) is a city located in Niigata, Japan. As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 194,327 and the density of 740.43 persons per km². The total area is 262.45 km².

Shinano rever flows through it from the north to the south.

The city was founded on April 1, 1906.

It is known the second largest city in Niigata prefecture, though since January 1, 2005 Joetsu city which has recently merged with other municipalities has been the second largest city.

It is located in the middle of the prefecture, Chuetsu region. In the Edo period it was the capital of Nagaoka han. There is Nagaoka castle still today.

On April 1, 2005 it will be merged with neighbor municipalities and will be the second largest city in Niigata again.
