MPG
(Redirected from Mpg)
MPG or mpg is a three letter abbreviation with multiple meanings, including:
- miles per gallon, see fuel efficiency. Used alone, "mpg" is ambiguous, because US and imperial gallons are significantly different (quoted vehicle fuel efficiency is therefore significantly different for the same vehicle in the US and UK). Miles per gallon is the common measure used for fuel efficiency in the UK even though all road fuel is now sold there in litres. An unambigious measure is kilometers per litre (km/l though it may also be found written as kpl). During the 1973 oil crisis many Americans wanted cars with greater fuel efficiency. This led to a large growth in the importation of small, cheap yet fuel efficient cars from eastern Asia. Since then, with troubles in the middle east and a growing concern of damage to the ozone, fuel efficiency has become an important economic and environmental issue again. Studies have shown that with an average increase in 1 mile per gallon, America would save twice as much fuel as would be taken out of Alaska each year. With an average increase of seven miles per gallon, America would be completely independent of oil from the Middle East.
