Miguel Corte-Real
Miguel Corte-Real was a Portuguese explorer.
He was the son of João Vaz Corte-Real and the brother of Gaspar Corte-Real. Gaspar disappeared near Newfoundland in 1501. Miguel set out an expedition to search for him, but he disappeared as well.
Some scholars believe he made inscriptions on the Dighton Rock. They discerned the Portuguese Coat of Arms, a Portuguese cross, and the Latin text:
MIGUEL CORTEREAL v[oluntate] DEI hic DUX IND[iorum] 1511
