The Mercury Tracer was a subcompact Mercury car.

1987

The Tracer replaced the Mercury Lynx in 1987 for the 1988 model year. It was a rebadged version of the Ford Laser model already sold in Asia and Australia, which was itself a restyled Mazda 323. It was built in Hermosillo in Mexico.

Engines:

  • 1.6 L B6 I4, 82 hp/92 ft.lbf

1991

The 1991 model was now Mercury's version of the Ford Escort, which, like the Laser, was now based on the Mazda 323's Mazda B platform. The Tracer LTS was on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1991.

Engines:

  • 1.9 L (1868cc) SEFI I4, 88 hp/108 ft.lbf
  • 1.8 L (1835cc) MPFI I4, 127 hp/114 ft.lbf

1993

The Tracer was restyled for 1993. Engines remained the same.

1997

The Tracer and Escort were updated in 1997 with a much-changed exterior and a new engine. The platform remained the same as before. The Tracer was discontinued in 1999.

  • 2.0 L (1986cc) SOHC I4, 100 hp/125 ft.lbf
