Mecano

(For the toy construction material, see Meccano)

Mecano was a synth-pop (in Spanish, tecno) band from Madrid, Spain. Brothers Nacho and José María Cano along with singer Ana Torroja formed the band in 1981 (1981 in music). Soon after forming, they achieved wide-spread popularity with their debut single, "Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar". Nacho Cano soon branched out into producing other bands, and both he and his brother wrote songs for other pop up-starts. Mecano coincided with the Madrilenian Movida, but they were seen as a "posher" group. Mecano had another hit in 1986 (1986 in music) with "Me Cuesta Tanto Olvidarte". In 1991 (1991 in music), the band members decided to set out on solo careers. Prior to their international success in 1986, Mecano had three successful albums in Spain and Europe. However, it wasn't until the release of their 1986 album, "Entre el Cielo y el Suelo" that they achieved international success beyond the Spanish-speaking world. One of their most important songs, "Hijo de la Luna", was covered as an aria by one of Opera's greatest contemporary singers: Montserrat Caballé. Their follow-up album, Descanso Dominical, produced their biggest single ever "Mujer Contra Mujer", which touched on the theme of a same sex relationship between two women, seen through the eyes of a male friend who only later realized what was going on. The song was recorded in French, English and Italian giving Mecano their first truly global hit.

The majority of the lyrics were written by one of the Cano brothers from a male perspective, and sung by Ana Torroja.

The actress Penélope Cruz debuted before the Spanish public in a Mecano video clip, La fuerza del destino. She later held a relationship with Nacho Cano for years.

In early 2005 a musical written by Nacho Cano, entitled "Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar" is due to open in Madrid.

Also in 2005, the members of Mecano are scheduled to release a double-CD/DVD package commemorating the 25th anniversary since the creation of the pop-group. The new CD/DVD by the name of "Mecanografia" will include a compilation of all their singles, never-before released songs, and a DVD with videos and early concert appearances.

The only song that Ana Torroja wrote when she was the voice leader of MECANO was the song that has as title: 'MOSQUITO', of which only the text of the refrain (chorus) is what she composed, the rest of the song it wrote Nacho Cano.

MECANO recorded some of their songs in language English, of which only one of them was published in a single-disc: 'THE UNIVITED GUEST', which is the version in English of the song: 'ME COLÉ EN UNA FIESTA'.

Others of the songs that also they were recording in English for MECANO are: 'HAWAII-BOMBAY' / 'YOU', but these songs were never published on official discs.

It is good to mention that MECANO also recorded many of their songs in Italian, songs as: 'FIGLIO DELLA LUNA' / 'CROCE DI LAME' / 'UN ANNO DI PIÙ' / 'UNO DI QUEGLI AMANTI' / 'PER LEI CONTRO DI LEI' / 'IL CINEMA' / 'VADO A NUOVA YORK' / 'FERMATI A MADRID' / 'MI COSTA TANTO DI SCORDARTI' / 'RESPONSO POSITIVO' / 'ANNA È MICHAEL' / 'UNA ROSA È UNA ROSA' / 'TU' (in Italian language) / 'DALAI LAMA' (in Italian language) / 'IL 7 DI SEPTEMBRE' / 'LA FORZA DEL DESTINO'.

This without mentioning, many songs that MECANO recorded in French: "UNE FEMME AVEC UNE FEMME" / "DIS-MOI LUNE D'ARGENT" / "UNE HISTORIE A TROIS" / "NATURE MORTE" / "LE PARDIES ARTIFICIEL" / "TOI" / "J.C." (in French language) / "IL 7 SEPTEMBRE".

Some of the songs of this one musical group that they have stayed as unpublished songs are: "LA EXTRAÑA POSICIÓN" (original versión and disco-mix version) / "QUIERO VIVIR EN LA CUIDAD" / "VIAJE ESPACIAL" / "NAPOLEÓN" / "SÚPER-RATÓN" / "ME NO PARLE VOUZ FRANÇAIS" / "ME HE DECLARADO EN GUERRA" (demo) / "CRISTÓBAL COLÓN" / "EL CABALLO DE ESPARTERO" (demo) / "SOLO" (demo) / "LÍA" / "EL PEZ" / "EL ROMANCE DE LA NIÑA MARÍA LUZ" / "ARLEQUÍN" / "AL ALBA" / "¿QUÉ HACES TÚ EN EL MUNDO?" / "LA BOLA DE PELO" ("Mujer contra mujer"'s demo) / "FÁBULA"-demo, and different many more...

The songs of: "LA FUERZA DEL DESTINO" and "EL 7 DE SEPTIEMBRE", are 2 songs that are dedicated to miss: Coloma Fernández Armero, who was Nacho Cano's girlfriend some years. The majority of the people thinks that these songs are dedicated to Penelope Cruz, thing that is totally false. Penelope only took part in the recording of the video-clip of the song: "LA FUERZA DEL DESTINO".

MECANO took part in the album: "GREENPEACE, SALVEMOS AL MEDITERRRÁNEO" (1.985), it's a Long Play of several artists, in where MECANO take part with an alone so called song: "CANCIÓN CORTITA PARA ANTES QUE NOS ABANDONE EL MAR", that is a song that has a duration of: 57 seg. (It is a keyboard simulating an acoustic piano and Ana Torroja's voice).
