Biographical sketch of Master "K"
Born on the East coast of the United States.
Profession: Shibari master, writer, photographer, educator
He holds degrees in English Literature and Asian Studies.
From early in life Master "K" has pursued the study of Japanese culture and Kinbaku-bi, the beauty of Shibari art. His collection of historical and artistic materials related to this art now number almost a thousand items, and is one of the largest Kinbaku/Shibari research archives in North America. In his twenties, he discovered the works of Shibari master, Chimuro Nureki, photographer Akio Fuji and their renowned Kinbiken organization, and became dedicated to their principles of beauty in Shibari technique and photography.
In 1995, he formed his own Kinbiken style study group and began teaching.
In 1999, he began to publish his photographic studies. This occurred at a time when he was becoming disillusioned by misogynistic and unsafe depictions of Shibari on the Internet and wanted to present a more positive image. His stated goal, through his teaching, writings and photographs, is to "present to the English speaking world, an accurate, safe and positive portrait of the centuries old Japanese art of Kinbaku."
He is the author of, "Shibari, the Art of Japanese Bondage" from SECRET Publishing. This art book (one of the first on this subject in English and German) covers the history of Shibari, its origins and terms, has several tutorials and is illustrated with over 60 photographs.
He now lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
Since 1999, Master "K"'s work has appeared widely in various magazines, galleries and on web pages dedicated to the art of Shibari/Kinbaku. These include:
