Mary Ellen Chase

Mary Ellen Chase (born February 24, 1887 in Blue Hill, Maine, USA; died July 28, 1973 in Northampton, Massachusetts) was a teacher, scholar, and writer.

Chase received a Ph.D. in English from the University of Minnesota where she served as an assistant professor from 1922 to 1926. She taught at Smith College from 1926 until her retirement in 1955. She was one of the most important regional literary figures of the early twentieth century.
