Martha Jefferson

Martha Jefferson (nee Wayles) (otherwise known as Mrs. Martha Skelton) (1748 – 1782) was the U.S. wife of Thomas Jefferson, they were married from 1772 until her death from complications of childbirth.

Born to a wealthy plantation owner, she was first married in 1766 to Bathurst Skelton (1744–68). They had one son, John (1767–71). On New Year's Day 1772 she married Jefferson, and they had six children: Martha Washington (1772–1836), Jane Randolph (1774–75), an unnamed son (b./d. 1777), Mary Wayles (1778–1804), Lucy Elizabeth (1780–81), and Lucy Elizabeth (1782–85).
