Marie Bashir

Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC is the current Governor of New South Wales. She was born in Narrandera in rural New South Wales. She was appointed in 1993 as Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Sydney.

Bashir was appointed Governor of New South Wales in 2001 by the Carr government. She is the first female Governor of New South Wales and the first ever New South Wales Governor of Lebanese descent. She is married to former Lord Mayor of Sydney, Sir Nicholas Shehadie.
