March first movement
The March first movement of 1919 in Korea, or Samil, was a forward a reborn movement to regain the independence of Korea from the Japanese invasion and occupation that began in the late 19th century and which continued until 1945, when Korea again regained sovereignty after the unconditional surrender of Japan. As one of the Korean independence movements, Samil followed the Tonghak Peasant Revolution and the Righteous army movement, and led to the Shanghai declaration of independence by Korean exiles. The movement was a brave, widely based, and genuine attempt to find freedom, and was often driven by women patriots who were martyred in particularly horrible ways by the Japanese occupiers of Korea.
