MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology
The MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology (often simply called the MacDiarmid Institute) is a New Zealand research organisation specialising in materials science and nanotechnology. It is based at Victoria University of Wellington, although also draws on other universities and on two Crown Research Institutes.
The Institute is named after Alan MacDiarmid, a New Zealander who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (with two others) in 2000. It was established by the government as one of seven Centres of Research Excellence throughout the country.
The Institute divides its work into five "themes":
- Nanoengineered materials
- Electronic materials (electro-optics and superconductivity)
- Conducting polymers
- Soft materials (rheology, fluid mechanics, porous media)
- Advanced materials (inorganic nano-structured materials, inorganic polymers, hybrid materials)
The Institute's current Director is Professor Paul Callaghan, a specialist in nuclear magnetic resonance.
