The M101 and M101A1 105mm light howitzers are intended to be used when the more preferable M198 155mm howitzer cannot be employed. They are an old weapon (Viet Nam era).
It is towed to battle, and has a hydropneumatic shock absorber for recoil.The cannon is air-cooled.
It is used for both direct and indirect fire.
