Lugia

Lugia (Rugia in Japanese) is the silver bird Pokémon that lives on the Whirl Islands. It is first introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver, and appears also in Pokémon Crystal. This Pokémon represents the Silver version of the game. When the tower that it roosted on (in Ecruteak City) burnt in a fire, this Pokémon flew off and never returned. It is featured in the movie Pokémon 2000 called Revelation Lugia or Pokemon the Movie 2000:The Power of One. It is Flying and Psychic type, but it learns moves like Aeroblast, Hydro Pump, and Recover.

The Pokédex describes Lugia as a Pokémon that "quietly spends its time at the bottom of the sea because its powers are so strong"

Name Origin

Lugia's name might come from the spanish words "Luz" (light) and "Rugía" (Roared)

Lugia itself is inspired by the Halcyons, a race of mythical Greek creatures.

In the movie Lugia comes from the sea when the three Legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres are roused by a Pokémon collector who tries to catch the trio. Lugia then battles the raging Birds and with the help of Ash and Team Rocket, manages to calm them and restore peace to nature.

Lugia appears in the TV series when Ash travels to the Whirl Islands where he helps stop a Team Rocket scientist from separating a young Lugia from its parent.
