Louis III of Anjou

(Redirected from Louis III, Duke of Anjou)

Louis III (1403 – 12 November 1434) was Titular King of Naples, Count of Provence and Duke of Anjou.

He was eldest son and heir of Louis II of Anjou and Yolande of Aragon, Queen of Four Kingdoms.

Pope Martin V invested him 4 December 1419 as 'King of Sicily'.

He was in alliance with Milan and Venice.

Louis's family had been longtime rivals of the Durazzo family regarding the kingdom of Naples, but the last heir of Durazzo line, queen Joan II of Naples was childless and approaching old age. Young Louis became slowly reconciled with her, and the queen adopted young Louis in 1423. However, Louis was not able to secure his rule in the kingdom of Naples, as King Alfonso V of Aragon also claimed it and brought thev warring to Louis's own inherited lands of Provence.

He died childless in Cosenza, which is located in Neapolitan lands. He was succeeded by his next brother René of Anjou.
