This is an alphabetical list of countries of the world, including both de jure and de facto independent states as well as (inhabited) dependent territories. For a list of sovereign states only, see the list of sovereign states.

The names are given in English and include both the short official names (e.g. Afghanistan) and the (longer) official name (e.g. The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan). The listing of any name in this article is not meant to imply an official position in any naming dispute.

Included entities

As of April 2005, there are 240 entities on this list. It corresponds to:

In this article, de jure and de facto sovereign states are only included if they are included in the List of sovereign states.

Entities not included

  • various disputed territories which fall into neither of the above categories, including Jubaland, Puntland (Somalia), Cabinda (Angola), Kurdistan (Iraq), and Kurdistan (Turkey).
  • Autonomous entities legally part of sovereign states (e.g. Catalonia, Scotland and Wales)
  • Other divisions of countries, including overseas regions integrated in the country, like the French overseas departments and the Spanish overseas communities.
  • Dependent territories without indigenous inhabitation are not listed
  • Entities considered to be micronations that are internationally not recognized

Note 1: Palestine: "State of Palestine" was declared in 1988 and currently recognized by 93 countries. The international status of Palestine is further supported, short of further present recognition as a state, by non-recognizing countries' according the (at least closely associated) Palestinian Authority a pivotal role in the process that may involve their eventually recognizing a State of Palestine. See also: proposals for a Palestinian state and Palestinian territories. Gaza Strip, West Bank, Israel include country articles about areas proposed for inclusion in various versions of a future more widely recognized state.
