Lisbon, New York

Lisbon is a town located in St. Lawrence County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,047.

History

The Town of Lisbon was the first town in the county, formed in 1801, before the county was established.

Geography

The north town line is marked by the St. Lawrence River, which is the international border with Canada, the Province of Ontario.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 294.4 km² (113.7 mi²). 280.3 km² (108.2 mi²) of it is land and 14.1 km² (5.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.78% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 4,047 people, 1,468 households, and 1,101 families residing in the town. The population density is 14.4/km² (37.4/mi²). There are 1,719 housing units at an average density of 6.1/km² (15.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.27% White, 0.12% African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,468 households out of which 36.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.4% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.0% are non-families. 19.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $35,772, and the median income for a family is $38,384. Males have a median income of $30,558 versus $25,525 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,784. 14.1% of the population and 7.5% of families are below the poverty line.
