New Hanover Island

New Hanover Island, formerly called Lavongal is a volcanic island, part of the Bismarck Archipelago within Papua New Guinea. Before the Territory of New Guinea became independent of the United Kingdom, Lavongal was part of the New Ireland subdistrict. Measuring some 460 square miles (1,190 km²), it had a population in 1960 of 5000.
