Laponian area

The Laponian area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the province of Laponia in northern Sweden. It consists of the national parks Muddus, Sarek, Padjelanta and Stora Sjöfallet, together with the nature reserves Sjaunja and Stubba and the areas of Sulitelma, Tjuoltadalen, and Rapadalen. The total area is about 9400 km².

The area was named a World Heritage Site for both its natural and its cultural interest. It is one of the largest wilderness areas of Europe, and it is also part of Sapmi, the homeland of the Sami people.
