Kevin Coyne

Kevin Coyne was an English singer, composer, writer and painter.

He was born on 27 January, 1944 in Derby, and educated at the Joseph Wright School of Art from 1957 to 1961. He then studied graphics and painting at Derby School of Art from 1961 to 1965, at the same time performing in Folk Clubs.

From 1965 to 1968 he worked as a social therapist at Whittingham Hospital, Preston, and then at London's Soho Project as a drugs counsellor. He was a vocalist with Siren and, aided by plugs from John Peel, his first two singles and two albums sold reasonably well, so he quit his day job and made a solo album Case History.

Now signed with Virgin Records he toured Germany then took up residence in Nuremberg, all the time continuing with his painting. He also wrote books of poems and short stories, some in German.

He married twice, and had two sons. He died on 2 December 2004.
