Phantom Thief Jeanne

(Redirected from Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne)

Phantom Thief Jeanne, also known as Jeanne, the Kamikaze Thief, and known in Japan as Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne (神風怪盗ジャンヌ Kamikaze Kaitō Jannu), is a manga by Arina Tanemura which falls under the Shōjo genre, more specifically the Magical Girl sub-genre.

CMX, an imprint of DC Comics, licensed the series as Phantom Thief Jeanne. Toei Animation, the creator of the anime, refers to the series as Jeanne, the Kamikaze Thief on its English-language website.

Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne was later turned into a TV anime. It was featured on a Japanese monthly manga magazine Ribon during Februrary 1998 – July 2000, 30 stories in total. Seven volumes of the manga were published. The anime was a Toei Animation production, and aired from February 1999 – January 2000 on TV Asahi (44 episodes).

Story

It is almost the year 2000. Kami's power is scattered on earth, and if he does not gather enough by the year 2000, he will die. Maou, who wishes for this, sends his own agents to gather the energy in the form of chess pieces.

The 16 year old Kusakabe Maron is usually a normal student, but she can transform with the assistance of the angel Fin Fish in to the reincarnation of Jeanne D'Arc in order to hunt demons, which hide themselves as works of art. If a demon is defeated, the associated work of art disappears only to be replaced by an angelic painting, which is why she is called a kaitou (mysterious thief).

Maron's best friend is Miyako, the daughter of a police officer who aims to arrest Jeanne. Maron falls in love with Chiaki who is also secretly a demon hunter.

Jeanne's weapons include her Checkmate pin which she can summon from her transformation rosary, her gymnastic ribbon, a fan, and later a sword. Chiaki, or Kaitou Sindbad (Sinbad), uses daggers in the manga, but a chakram-like weapon in the anime. If Jeanne's Ribbon or Sinbad's Bandanna is undone, then so too is their respective transformations.

The 7-volume manga contains a few plot twists involving Fin Fish, Noin, and of course, Jeanne and the people around her.
