KDKA-TV is the CBS television affiliate serving the Pittsburgh DMA. The station may be known as CBS 2 Pittsburgh. The station is one of the few stations (including KYW) that is not in the area where call letters begin with "K," which are mainly west of the Mississippi River. Its transmitter is located in Pittsburgh.
History
KDKA-TV went on the air in 1949 as WDTV-TV as an owned & operated station of the now-defunct DuMont Network. Originally positioned on channel 3, the station moved to channel 2 and gained the CBS affiliation by the mid 1950s. At the same time, the station adopted the same call letters as their sister radio station, KDKA Radio, which was the world's first commercially-licensed radio station in 1920, after Channel 2 was acquired by Pittsburgh-based Westinghouse Electric.
In 1994, KDKA was ahead of the ball as Westinghouse changed all of its TV stations to CBS affiliates. The following year, the company bought CBS, making KDKA-TV a CBS O&O station after four decades as being simply a CBS affiliate.
After Westinghouse's 1997 split-up that saw KDKA Radio and KDKA-TV part ways from Westinghouse, Viacom merged with CBS in 2000. KDKA instantly became a sister station with Pittsburgh UPN affiliate WNPA-TV, which was already owned by Viacom.
Today, KDKA-TV is owned by CBS, while KDKA Radio is owned by Infinity Broadcasting. Both CBS and Infinity are owned by Viacom.
