Hong Kong remains an independent judicial entity using the English common law system after the transfer of sovereignty. Courts and law enforcement authorities in mainland China have no jurisdiction over legal matters in Hong Kong, except for the intepretation of the Basic Law by the National People's Congress or its Standing Committee.
