José Limón

José Limón (January 12 1908—December 2 1972) was a dancer who help define the shape of modern and contemporary dance.

In 1946, after 10 years of studying and perfoming with Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman, he established his own company with Humphrey as Artistic Director. During her tenure, Humphrey choreographed several works for the company, and it was during her mentorship that Limón created his best known work The Moor’s Pavane in 1949.
