John S. Battle
John S. Battle (1890-1972) was a Democratic Governor of Virginia, served 1950-1954. Formerly State Senator from Charlottesville. His chief achievement was to provide unrestricted state funding for public schools. He was later appointed by President Eisenhower to U.S. Civil Rights Commission.
John S. Battle High School in Washington County, Virginia, built in 1959, bears his name.
