John H. Stevens
John H. Stevens (1820–1900) was the first authorized resident of Minneapolis. He had permission to occupy the site, which was part of the Fort Snelling military reservation, in exchange for providing ferry service. His house, built in 1850, is believed to be the first frame house west of the Mississippi River. The Stevens House was moved to Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis in 1896. The house is now a museum, with tours available on the weekends.
