Life and career

Foster was born in Los Angeles, California where she attended an exclusive prep school, the Lycée Français de Los Angeles, before going on to Yale University, where she earned a BA in literature, graduating magna cum laude in 1985.

Foster has made more than 50 appearances in film and television since the age of eight. She began her career at the age of two in television commercials, including an appearance as the Coppertone Girl, and then went on to appear in a variety of television series. She starred as Addie Pray in the 1974 television series, Paper Moon. In film, at the age of 14, she earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Martin Scorsese's film Taxi Driver.

She is fluent enough in the French language that she has performed in French films. Foster won the first of her two Golden Globe and Academy Awards as Best Actress for her role as a gang-rape victim in The Accused (1988). She earned her second for her co-starring role opposite Anthony Hopkins in 1991's The Silence of the Lambs.

Foster is intensively private about her personal life. Having given birth to two sons (Charles in 1998 and Kit in 2001), she has never revealed the identity of the father of the boys or if the boys even share the same father. Because of this and because she has lived with a female companion for several years, many suspect she is a lesbian, though she personally has never made any public statement regarding her sexual orientation. Her brother's biography identifies her as such, but since the book is unauthorized, it is highly suspect.

John Hinckley claimed he shot U.S. President Ronald Reagan to impress Foster.
